Italian Earthquake
An Italian earthquake struck Italy its epicenter near Norcia in central Italy, with a magnitude of 6.5. Earthquakes are caused by tectonic activity, specifically a meeting between the African and Eurasian plate, which created the Apennine Mountains, where the earthquake occurred. Effects include loss of life, with at least 73 dead, and many left homeless and many historical buildings destroyed. The quote “Everything has been destroyed. The towns no longer exist,” from Aleandro Petrucci best sums up the effects.

Rising Sea Levels
With increasing global warming, melting glaciers, ice sheets, etc. would bring sea levels up. The map shows Europe with the ice caps all melted, and a 216 feet rise in sea level. Causes of this melting include mainly global warming from climate change. The emission of greenhouse gases from factories, cars, and so on have increased the amount of heat trapped by the greenhouse effect. As a result, many population and cultural centers will be flooded, most notably Venice. This would displace millions of people along the coast, creating a massive refugee crisis. The map below is a prediction of coastlines should all the ice in the world melt.

Water Scarcity
Water scarcity and drought becomes more frequent with increasingly disastrous effects. While droughts are a natural phenomenon, their increasing frequency can be mainly attributed to the changing weather patterns accompanying global warming. One estimate showed that by 2007, 11% of the EU’s population and 17% of its area had been affected by water scarcity. Ultimately, to provide citizens with water, the EU ended up spending 100 billion euros over the past 30 years, or about 108.6 billion dollars. In the graphic below, the extensive damage especially in Italy, Spain and Portugal is very noticeable.

Wildfire in Spain
In Spain, a large wildfire occurred on the east coast near the resort town of Javea. Officials suspect that it was intentionally started. The fire forced the evacuation of about 1000 residents and vacationers, destroying homes and property along with the forests surrounding the area.
